Overwintering Rudbeckias

The ‘Enchanted’ series of Rudbeckia has captured my heart over the past few years, but while they are beautiful, the plants don’t overwinter in my garden. I was inspired by Rosie when she mentioned last September that she overwintered her rudbeckias in her greenhouse and I thought it was worthwhile trying this with the Rudbeckia ‘Enchanted’ series plants.

During October the plants were potted into 3 ltr plastic pots, three of which went into the greenhouse and four into the cold frame.

There is a noticeable difference between those kept in the greenhouse and those in the cold frame. The greenhouse plants are showing good growth (perhaps too much for this time of year) while those from the cold frame have only a hint of new growth.

I think that three of the four cold frame plants are alive, with tiny green shoots sprouting from the base of the plant, hopefully, the final plant will catch up.

Will they mature to look just like those below? I hope so!

Time will tell whether they will be successful or not, but I’ll post updates on their progress.

    1. We still have a lot of cold & wet weather to get through, Jude, but I’m hopeful. My greenhouse is very old, and a bit leaky – it’s also unheated, so not ideal. I have to watch for mould. But John made me a little rough ‘n ready cold frame a few years ago that doesn’t take up much space and is always packed full through the winter. Seedling too, seem to survive in it. If you don’t have space, that could be an answer – but don’t give up on your conservatory.
