Wednesday was the start of the fifteenth week since my husband and I went into lockdown, just a little ahead of most in this country. On Wednesday it was also the first day in all those weeks that I ventured out of the house (other than the garden) to go for a walk.
The rain started to ease off around 9am and I and headed down to the shore front, just one mile away and a short 4-minute drive. A few people, mostly dog-walkers were there, and it was really reassuring that everyone Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 27-06”
The weather has thrown everything at us this week, cold mornings (yes, central heating cold), warm afternoons, thunderstorms and torrential downpours. The plants took a bit of a beating overnight on Tuesday during a thunderstorm. Heavy rain turned roses to mush, broke stems and flattened newly planted annuals. However, after a bit of deadheading, pruning and propping up, everything picked up and looked fairly good again in the warm sun that followed on Wednesday afternoon.
I had a small plant order arrive this week, with Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 20-06”
Another busy lockdown week has passed, and most of the garden is now planted up. I’m still waiting for a few online order plants to be delivered, and they’re running late. I can’t complain, it’s been great to have that online resource during the lockdown.
In the garden there are many plants I would like to move to different spots, and although we actually moved a couple this week, by necessity rather than choice, the rest will have to wait until autumn. It was the wrong time I know, but they seem to have recovered.
I think I’ve over-planted…I do it every year. I don’t seem Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 13-06”
Brrr…just as well I didn’t pack away my winter clothes. A drop in temperature of 12 degrees causes dismay at any time of the year, but in early June when most of the tender plants are in the ground it’s an unwelcome shock. I’ve had to don a fleece and a jacket again when I had been enjoying working in a lightweight summer shirt. There’s little doubt that that the change in weather will have slowed down growth but hopefully the plants will be strong enough to hold their own with this chilly, and very windy spell of weather.
Weather aside, the garden’s getting into the mood for summer, with roses beginning to open their buds, and some annuals also showing their Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 06-06”
The weather’s been fabulous this week, what a joy to have light winds, sunshine and real warmth. Here in Scotland, we moved into Covid-19 Lockdown Stage One yesterday. Some friends were anxious to be able to get out for walks or go to see family members, but right now I feel happy to just stay around my own house and garden until any initial rush is over.
If I had to complain it would only be to say that the heat has slowed my gardening efforts. I have to remind myself that this is only the end of May, Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 30-05”
