Seeds

The blog has had a long autumn/winter break, but it’s now time to wake it up. The garden is starting to show signs of returning to life and now is the time to think about sowing seeds.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve declared that I was finished with seeds, convinced I wouldn’t be persuaded to sow another single one. Yes, there were challenges in the past with multiple trays of seedlings damping off, or seeds that simply refused to germinate, but here I am – happily about to start sowing seeds once again!

Last week I placed an order for various seeds but forgot two I really couldn’t be without, Ammi visnaga and Verbena bonariensis. Luckily I could add them to a separate plant order and within a few days all the seeds had arrived. Only then did I remember I’d been to a garden centre a few weeks before and had already bought seeds!

Late Summer Gardening: What’s Growing in Week Two of August

I opened the blinds early one morning this week and looked down on the garden. ‘Autumn has definitely arrived’, I thought, before remembering that it was only the 5th of August. The garden still has plenty of flowers, but that morning the garden looked defeated as the rain hammered down and the wind howled. I kind of felt a bit like that myself.

I think most of us here have accepted that all hope of a real summer has vanished. My mind is now starting to turn to late winter and spring flowering bulbs and plants. There’s always something else to cheer up home gardeners, isn’t there.

Here is my contribution to this week’s Six on Saturday.

Chilly

I packed away my winter clothes when I thought summer had arrived. I was too hasty. I should know by now how unpredictable our weather can be and now I’m searching around for warm clothing. Our top temperatures have hovered around a chilly 13℃ (55.4℉), with a ‘feels-like’ 11℃ (51.8℉) thanks to the relentless cold winds – but I hope you’ve been enjoying warmer weather than we are here.

Despite the unseasonably cool weather, the garden is beginning, slowly, to show summer colour, though some plants, such as the oriental poppies are struggling to stay upright, and refusing to open fully.

I was visiting one of my daughters and missed last week’s Six on Saturday, but here is my garden offering for this weekend.
