Rushing into August

This is a very quickie post today. Too much to do, too much happening! Why is retirement so busy?!!

It’s been another dry week here, a mix of sun and cloud, not too cold, not too warm, with light winds. That’s suited me, but even so, I couldn’t get into the garden until late on Thursday.

But on with Six on Saturday!

Colourful July

I’m back again for Six on Saturday now that my visiting family have returned home. The house is quiet except for the whirring of the washing machine as it deals with the mountain of towels and the heaps of bedding outside each bedroom door. I’m doing my best to ignore it all, because the garden is calling me back.

The garden is heavy with colour right now, but individual plants, and in particular, the roses, are damaged by the heavy downpours of the previous week. I haven’t had the time to get round everything with pruners to tidy them up, but before my family returned home, my daughter and my 14 yr old grandson son spent an afternoon in the garden deadheading the roses. Alas, more heavy rain has thundered down since then and now I’m having to repeat the process by myself.

Here’s my selection of six photographs for Six on Saturday.

Welcome, Spring of 2025

Six on Saturday

Today, it’s all about the little giant of color – the crocus. I was starting to wonder when the flowers would make their grand entrance, and now, amidst this week of unpredictable weather with rain, sleet, wind, frost, and sunshine, the crocuses have bravely pushed through, their rain-soaked petals shining in the otherwise barren garden borders.

The tiny crocuses below are in a container of mixed-planting and have returned each February over the past few years. The three shots below were taken over four days. To my huge surprise our temperatures reached 12C on Wednesday and coaxed the flowers to unfurl. In the last shot, I caught them just before they closed the following day.

Summer is Hiding

I know many of you were hit by torrential rain last Monday. Here, it started at 11 am and thundered down without a pause, through the day, and continued overnight.

The forecast had been for a good, sunny, warm day and I have to ask myself – how could they get it so wrong? My son had taken one of his holiday days to work on the construction of his garden office, and my husband had gone out early that morning to help him. Instead of adding to the building, they spend the entire day trying to waterproof it. They were soaked to the skin and so discouraged.

As for me – well, I stood at the patio doors and watched the plants slowly bend over until they reached the ground. We then had a couple of sunny days when most of the plants lifted themselves back up. Yesterday though, we returned to very heavy rain and overall temperatures are poor.

Does anyone know where summer has gone?
