The blog has had a long autumn/winter break, but it’s now time to wake it up. The garden is starting to show signs of returning to life and now is the time to think about sowing seeds.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve declared that I was finished with seeds, convinced I wouldn’t be persuaded to sow another single one. Yes, there were challenges in the past with multiple trays of seedlings damping off, or seeds that simply refused to germinate, but here I am – happily about to start sowing seeds once again!

Last week I placed an order for various seeds but forgot two I really couldn’t be without, Ammi visnaga and Verbena bonariensis. Luckily I could add them to a separate plant order and within a few days all the seeds had arrived. Only then did I remember I’d been to a garden centre a few weeks before and had already bought seeds!

Purple, Pink and Sunshine Yellow

Six on Saturday

Glorious purple. It’s always an exciting moment when you find little clumps of crocuses here and there in the borders. I spotted these on Friday morning just after the rain had gone off. They were new, fresh and had held up well against the awful downpours of the previous few days.

One Productive Gardening Day

Monday was a day of gardening from morning until late afternoon with my husband doing all the heavy work (as usual) while I potted on seedlings in the greenhouse and supervised (not as easy as it sounds!) the removal or lifting and dividing of plants. In general, the borders were tidied up, weeds removed and the grass was cut and edged. Pots of summer bedding were emptied and made ready to receive winter and spring-flowering bulbs. That one productive day cheered me up and I felt we’d achieved a lot, though a quick glance at my list in the evening reminded me that there was so much more to deal with. But that’s gardening, isn’t it, it never ends.

I also managed to find time to take a few photographs and I’m glad I did because by Tuesday the rain was thundering down and it’s been wet every day since then, including today where we have an amber alert for rain.
