This is a very quickie post today. Too much to do, too much happening! Why is retirement so busy?!!
It’s been another dry week here, a mix of sun and cloud, not too cold, not too warm, with light winds. That’s suited me, but even so, I couldn’t get into the garden until late on Thursday.
But on with Six on Saturday!
I messaged my daughter in the US to say how hot it’s been this week at 28C. She sympathised and said it was 37C where she is.
I messaged my youngest in Australia and told her the same. She laughed and said, “Mum, it’s just going into spring here, and it’s 26C”. OK, I know how hot it gets over there, but I suppose it’s what you’re used to and here on the west coast of Scotland, 28C is hot! I’ve put my new autumn sweaters back in the wardrobe and dug out my summer blouses. And the sunscreen.
I’m sure Saturday Sixers up and down the country will be commenting about the heat we’ve had this week. It’s come as a surprise but I have to confess, I’ve enjoyed the warmth and sunshine, an unexpected treat for September.
My garden though, has been baking. I mentioned last week that my Cosmos were fading. I wanted to persuade them to last a little longer, but I made the decision this week not to use water on them and let them die off. I’ve made the same decision with other annuals and as a result, much of the garden is looking sad right now. But let’s take a look at this week’s selection for Six on Saturday.

The 2020 tomato plants have now been evicted from the greenhouse; I’m sad to see some of them go because they’ve been delicious, others I’m a bit disappointed that they didn’t live up to expectations.
But first, a little success story. Earlier in the year when I watched the Chelsea Flower Show, I saw presenter Toby Buckland demonstrating how to make more tomato plants for free. It was such a simple process, that I thought it couldn’t possibly be that easy, and after a few days, when I had freed up a bit of time, I cut off some longer side shoots (those that I’d forgotten to take out, or just missed) and put them into pots. Seriously, it couldn’t be that easy to create a tomato plant? About 10 or so days later I removed them from their shady spot and took a peek to see if any had rooted. They had – all were growing well, and suddenly I had too many. However, I potted them all on, gave a few away and kept about ten plants, which grew at a surprisingly fast rate.

There was no post last week, and sadly I didn’t get the time to look at other ‘sixers’ posts either. My daughter and her family came for a visit, at very short notice. We had been expecting them this weekend, but other events came along and it meant that they had to reschedule their plans for the following few weeks.

I made up my mind earlier this year that I wouldn’t be growing tomatoes. Our youngest daughter’s wedding was booked for July this year and we, plus our nearby family, would be away from home. Summertime, with no family to tend them, and not wanting to put the chore onto friends, I decided it would be best to just give them a miss this year.
