Having a Ball

It’s been a glorious week of sunshine, and the lack of wind meant that we had fairly decent temperatures again; 20℃ is high for this time in May. With no school runs this week (our nearby family were on holiday) we decided to call it a ‘home holiday’ and ease off a little on gardening. We had a lovely lunch on Monday to celebrate my husband’s birthday and the following day made a visit to Dumfries House, which is set in 2,000 acres of land and where I took some photos of the grounds. I’ll post them as soon as I can get time to upload them from the camera. We also took a trip to a couple of garden centres and I managed to find two pots for my new roses, plus a few other goodies too, of course.

But we couldn’t resist the pull of the garden, especially with such lovely weather. Thursday found us back at work in the garden tackling the tasks at hand.

At this time of the year, the tender plants are just starting the in-out process of hardening off, but the greenhouse and the cold frame have been too hot and the plants are all out in the open now. I think (hope!) they will all be in the soil by the end of next week. Weather permitting course. 🤔 Here are my six choices for this week’s Six on Saturday.

Purple, White and a Splash of Orange

This will be my last Six on Saturday for a few weeks. Next week I’ll be busy doing final preparations and starting to pack for a trip to the US to visit one of our daughters and her family.

The biggest job will be in the garden – trying to get the remaining plants into the ground, moving potted plants from their sunny areas into more shady areas, and leaving loads of instructions for various family members on how to look after everything.

Here’s my Six for this week.

Farewell Tulips – you’ve been amazing.

I couldn’t let the tulips leave without posting at least one final shot of my absolute favourite of the year, Tulip ‘Ballerina’. She looks as though she will last for another few days, after which she’s being planted into the ground. I’ve been really pleased with all the tulips this year, but I should have bought some more late flowerers to keep the show going a little longer. Lesson learned.

We’ve had some great weather this week, with only one day of wall-to-wall rain. There’s been an isolated shower or two, but otherwise, it’s been warm enough to discard jackets and change out of my gardening sweatshirt into a lightweight shirt. That’s great for mid-May in our area.

Six on Saturday 2020 15-08

Autumn is fast approaching, though at the moment we’re currently having a lovely warm spell of weather – so this week’s six is a tiny taster of the colours that we should be starting to see in a few weeks time. There’s reds, oranges, yellows, golds, and hints of purple. If autumn is this colourful then I’ll be smiling.

Temperatures from Wednesday on have been in the mid-twenties (my daughters who live in warmer lands tell me that’s cold) but for us, it’s about as high as we like it. My memories of 35-40C temperatures on visits to Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 15-08”

Six on Saturday 2020 23-05

There will be no gardening this weekend, the winds are too high and we have rain. Planting has been interrupted. I started planting mid-week by getting some dahlias into 20 litre pots and burying them in the borders (with the help of husband who had to dig the holes!). Four are in, one more will follow once it recovers from having most of its new growth munched by snails. Number six needs to decide whether it’s going to produce shoots or not. I suspect not. A further three small dahlias will be transferred into pots, to sit on the patio during the long, warm and lazy summer days that I’m dreaming about.

Some Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Double Click Mix’ and three Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 23-05”
