Having a Ball

It’s been a glorious week of sunshine, and the lack of wind meant that we had fairly decent temperatures again; 20℃ is high for this time in May. With no school runs this week (our nearby family were on holiday) we decided to call it a ‘home holiday’ and ease off a little on gardening. We had a lovely lunch on Monday to celebrate my husband’s birthday and the following day made a visit to Dumfries House, which is set in 2,000 acres of land and where I took some photos of the grounds. I’ll post them as soon as I can get time to upload them from the camera. We also took a trip to a couple of garden centres and I managed to find two pots for my new roses, plus a few other goodies too, of course.

But we couldn’t resist the pull of the garden, especially with such lovely weather. Thursday found us back at work in the garden tackling the tasks at hand.

At this time of the year, the tender plants are just starting the in-out process of hardening off, but the greenhouse and the cold frame have been too hot and the plants are all out in the open now. I think (hope!) they will all be in the soil by the end of next week. Weather permitting course. 🤔 Here are my six choices for this week’s Six on Saturday.

Six on Saturday 2020 21-11

In my little corner of the country, the garden has exhausted itself, and it’s looking sad and very dull, much like the weather. So this week I’m taking a look back to summer. Not only was it a Covid-19 summer, but it was also a dripping wet summer, at least, where I am. So this week my six is about rain. And before you switch off, this was welcome rain; it was light rain that fell gently one night in June and refreshed the garden after an unusually dry, sunny and warm spring.

Six on Saturday 2020 14-11

It’s been hectic these past two weeks and I suspect it’s going to be like that in the run up to Christmas. I missed last week’s six and didn’t manage to check out all your lovely blogs, but this week I’ll be able to take a tour and say hello.

The garden is in a sad state, there’s been so much rain and I’m tired of digging in heavy, muddy clay. I console myself with thoughts of snowdrops, narcissus, muscari, hellebores, little iris reticulata and more, that will bring colour back to the garden from late winter through spring. Perhaps this autumn will morph into a beautiful crisp winter. 😊

Six on Saturday 2020 10-10

The warm September and early October weather has been appreciated, by me and by the plants, especially the roses. They’re not all looking good, some have succumbed to the advancing season and others to the effects of black spot, which has been awful this year. There are a few that are looking great, and although they’ve been shown on the blog in the past, I can’t let the season pass without allowing them another weekend in the limelight.

The warmer weather also brought back the aphids and I’ve been trying to squish as many as possible when I see them, but it’s turning cold now, and hopefully, that will finish them off because my gardening gloves have been getting into a terrible mess. Yuck.

Six on Saturday 2020 26-09

Our overnight temperatures dropped to 3C & 4C during the past few nights, and tonight is forecast to be a very cold 1C (33.8F). Brrr… I hope the dahlias can cope with this, it’s still September and I’d like to have them flowering in the garden for a few more weeks yet. I checked on D. ‘Chat Noir’ on Thursday evening when I went out to close up the greenhouse and I was so excited to see it covered in masses of buds – some ready to open. Just imagine what a display that would be if they were to open together…I can dream, can’t I?

This week, we have been treated to loads of gloriously sunny days and, in sheltered spots, it’s been warm too. I paid the nursery another visit (more below), sowed Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 26-09”
