One week today we’ll have reached the end of January, and there’s a lot of new shoots appearing throughout the garden now, some on time, some early. The two pots of Iris reticulata (above) have flowered a bit earlier than I’d hoped, but they’re pretty and I enjoy looking at them from the study window on dark and gloomy wintery days. We’ve had a stormy week here, one of those weeks where house lights are on all day, every day. It had to get better at some time, and today, winds were lighter and for a while this morning, the sun shone…just for a while…but long enough to brighten my mood.
It was a good opportunity to get into the garden for a few hours. Mostly I was in the greenhouse, and when the sun was out, the temperature inside shot up to a glorious 15C. Continue reading “Six on Saturday 2020 01-18”
I’m very lucky to live in a warm cosy home, big enough to share with my visiting family, though now that my family has expanded quite a bit it’s not big enough when they all decide to come and stay at the same time!

Spring seems a long way off. Here on the west coast of Scotland the wind is howling, roof tiles rattling and the rain is beating against my study window.
I don’t mind venturing into the garden on cold days – as long as it’s not on bleak, dark, stormy days like today.

There’s something utterly captivating about the beauty of frost-coated, fading leaves. Here we’ve had three nights in a row when temperatures have dropped below zero, and the frost this morning was the heaviest yet. Today, the first day of the meteorological winter, the frost seemed perfectly timed. I layered myself up (many layers!), lifted my camera and braved the morning chill. click image for full post
